When making apple butter, one of the most crucial steps is preparing the apples correctly. Peeling, coring, and slicing the apples not only makes them easier to cook down but also ensures they cook evenly. Leaving the skins on can result in a grainy texture, which is not desirable in a smooth apple butter.

Ingredients

10 medium-sized apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Fuji, Honeycrisp, and Granny Smith)

1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust based on apple sweetness)

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup apple cider or water

Instructions

Prep the Apples: Begin by peeling, coring, and slicing the apples. Aim for uniform slices to ensure even cooking.

Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, salt, and vanilla extract. Stir well to coat the apples evenly.

Transfer to Crockpot: Pour the mixture into a Crockpot. Add the apple cider (or water) to the pot. Mix everything together gently.

Cook: Cover the Crockpot with its lid and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours. The apples should be soft and break down easily.

Blend: Once the cooking time is done, use an immersion blender to puree the apple mixture until smooth, or transfer to a food processor in batches. Blend until you reach your desired consistency.

Store: If it's too watery, continue to cook on high for an additional 30-60 minutes, uncovered, to thicken. Once done, let the apple butter cool before transferring it to sterilized jars.

Enjoy: Spread your homemade apple butter on toast, pancakes, or add it to desserts. It can also be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or frozen for up to a year.
