Ingredients

1 loaf of Italian bread (or any crusty bread)

1 pound ground beef (or turkey)

1 cup breadcrumbs

1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 egg

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 cup marinara sauce (plus extra for serving)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

2 cloves garlic, minced (for the garlic spread)

1 teaspoon dried parsley

Optional: Red pepper flakes for heat

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, 2 cloves of minced garlic, Italian seasoning, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Form Mini Meatballs: Roll the mixture into small meatballs (about 1 inch in diameter) and place them on a baking sheet. Bake the meatballs for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through.

Prepare Garlic Bread Boats: While the meatballs are baking, slice the Italian bread in half lengthwise to create two long halves. Scoop out some of the bread from the inside to create a well for the meatballs (keep the scooped-out bread for breadcrumbs if desired).

Make Garlic Spread: In a small bowl, mix together softened butter, 2 cloves of minced garlic, dried parsley, and a pinch of salt. Spread the garlic mixture evenly over both halves of the bread.

Assemble the Boats: Once the meatballs are done, evenly distribute them into the hollowed-out bread halves. Pour the marinara sauce over the meatballs and top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

Bake: Place the prepared bread boats on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve with extra marinara sauce for dipping and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes if desired.
