Whole wheat flour is a staple in many healthy recipes, and for good reason. Unlike refined white flour, whole wheat flour retains the bran and germ, which are packed with nutrients. This means that not only does it have a higher fiber content, promoting digestive health, but it also provides essential vitamins and minerals such as B vitamins, iron, and magnesium. Fiber is crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive system, as it aids in regular bowel movements and can help control blood sugar levels. By using whole wheat flour in our pizza rolls, we elevate the nutritional value of this beloved snack, ensuring that each roll is not only tasty but also beneficial for our health.

Ingredients

1 cup of whole wheat flour

1 cup of high-protein Greek yogurt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup low-fat shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup turkey pepperoni (or any high-protein pepperoni alternative)

1/4 cup marinara sauce (for dipping)

Optional: 1 tablespoon olive oil (for brushing)

Optional: fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, Greek yogurt, baking powder, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and salt. Mix until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour, one tablespoon at a time.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 1-2 minutes until it is smooth.

Roll Out the Dough: Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.

Assemble the Rolls: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Next, evenly distribute the turkey pepperoni on top of the cheese.

Roll It Up: Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough into a log shape. Pinch the seams to seal the ends, then cut the roll into 1-inch slices.

Place on Baking Sheet: Arrange the pizza rolls on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are spaced apart.

Optional Brushing: If desired, brush the tops of the rolls with a light coat of olive oil to enhance browning and flavor.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes | Servings: 4 (makes about 12 rolls)
