Ingredients

12 ounces penne pasta

1 pound ground beef

2 large onions, thinly sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 ½ cups beef broth

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup grated Gruyère cheese (plus extra for topping)

1 cup grated mozzarella cheese

Salt, to taste

Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil and add the penne pasta. Cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauté the Onions: In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Brown the Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Break it up with a spatula and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

Season the Mixture: Sprinkle the thyme, oregano, black pepper, and salt over the beef and onion mixture. Pour in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring to combine. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes.

Combine Pasta and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked penne pasta with the beef and onion sauce. Stir in the Gruyère cheese until melted and evenly distributed.

Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the pasta and beef mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with the mozzarella cheese and a handful of Gruyère cheese.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, sprinkle with fresh parsley, and let it cool slightly before serving.
