Ingredients

4 ripe heirloom tomatoes, assorted colors, sliced

8 oz fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini), halved

1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, torn

3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Salt and pepper to taste

1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion (optional)

1 avocado, diced (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Tomatoes: Wash the heirloom tomatoes thoroughly. Slice them into 1/4-inch thick slices. For smaller tomatoes, you can cut them in halves or quarters depending on their size.

Prepare the Mozzarella: In a bowl, gently mix the halved mozzarella balls with a drizzle of olive oil, a pinch of salt, and pepper. Let them sit for a few minutes to absorb the flavors.

Assemble the Salad: On a large serving platter, alternate the tomato slices and mozzarella balls in a decorative manner, leaving spaces for the basil leaves. For added flavor, sprinkle the sliced red onion and avocado across the arrangement if using.

Make the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes for a little heat. Adjust the seasoning to your liking.

Dress the Salad: Drizzle the prepared dressing over the assembled tomatoes and mozzarella.

Garnish: Scatter the torn basil leaves over the top of the salad for a fresh pop of color and flavor.

Chill: Place the salad in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the salad to chill.

Serve: Remove from the fridge and serve cold as a delightful starter or a refreshing side dish at your next gathering.
