Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

4 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon cornstarch

For the Crust:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 large egg

For the Crumble Topping:

1 cup old-fashioned oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Caramel Drizzle:

1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easier removal.

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the diced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Set aside to let the flavors meld while you prepare the crust.

Make the Crust: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the melted butter and egg, mixing until combined. The dough will be somewhat crumbly. Press the dough firmly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form an even layer.

Bake the Crust: Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.

Add the Apple Filling: Spread the apple filling evenly over the pre-baked crust.

Prepare the Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and softened butter. Mix until crumbly and crumb-like in texture. Sprinkle this topping evenly over the apple filling.

Bake the Bars: Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes, or until the crumble is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.

Cool and Drizzle: Allow the pie bars to cool in the dish on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes. Once cooled, drizzle generously with caramel sauce.

Serve: Cut into bars and serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat!
