Ingredients

8 oz (225g) whole wheat pasta (like spaghetti or fettuccine)

1 bunch of fresh asparagus (about 1 lb), trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 lemon (zest and juice)

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (plus more for serving)

Salt and pepper to taste

1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, finely chopped

Optional: pine nuts or walnuts for garnish

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the whole wheat pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta.

Blanch the Asparagus: While the pasta is cooking, bring a small pot of water to a boil. Add the asparagus pieces and blanch for about 2-3 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp. Drain and immediately transfer the asparagus to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Drain again and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Be careful not to burn it.

Combine Ingredients: Add the blanched asparagus to the skillet along with the red pepper flakes, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Toss gently to combine, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until heated through.

Mix with Pasta: Add the drained pasta to the skillet, along with about 1/2 cup of the reserved pasta water. Toss everything together to combine. If the pasta seems dry, gradually add more pasta water until you reach your desired consistency.

Finish it Off: Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese and chopped basil, adjusting seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve: Divide the pasta into serving bowls, sprinkle with additional Parmesan cheese, and garnish with pine nuts or walnuts if desired. Serve immediately for a fresh and vibrant meal.
